Mark Washington Mark Washington
Defensive Back
BC Lions

First it was Washington D.C. Then Montreal. Then Vancouver. In the past three seasons, Mark Washington’s career has taken him from coast to coast, and country to country. A defensive back whose 8-year career has straddled the NFL and CFL, Washington knows what it’s like to live with uncertainty.

“Professional sports is a very unpredictable business,” he says. . . “You’re hot today and you’re cold tomorrow. You’re the man today and you’re garbage tomorrow. At any point I could be injured and my career could be over. At any point the team could decide to go in a different direction and I could be out of a job.”

Living with that kind of instability could be paralyzing, especially to a man with a wife and baby daughter, but Washington knows where his security lies. “Not knowing what tomorrow will hold is difficult for everyone,” he acknowledges. “But my faith is in Jesus Christ and he tells me to trust in him and not in the circumstances going on around me. Sure I’ve been in situations where I’ve had the rug pulled out from underneath me, but the bottom line is my faith is in Christ; he’ll take care of me and my family.”

Sometimes we make the mistake of thinking because circumstances are difficult God doesn’t care about us. Actually the opposite is true. It’s in these times of uncertainty and struggle that God is there for us, waiting for us to reach out and ask for a helping hand.
